A 6.4M earthquake struck at 3:57am Saturday (11:57am Pacific, Friday) 26 miles aways from Taiwan's city of Tainan collapsing at least a 17-story and 7-story residential buildings. The quake was shallow, only 6 miles deep. So far, at least 3 deaths are reported, but it is unknown how many are trapped. Over 120,000 homes and businesses are without power. Population in Tainan is 1.2 million.

A new feature on Google Maps will allow users to view local and worldwide disaster alerts, and is now available to users, Google announced on 25 January. Called Google Public Alerts, the new feature draws on weather, public safety, and earthquake alerts from federal agencies to supplement Google Map searches. Whether or not an alert will appear in the results column depends on activity at a location, severity of the alert, and the search query.
